Updates

A lot has been going on the past few days.

* I got done with a big deadline
* Attended [[http://sosp2007.org|SOSP]] in Skamania, WA
* Got my golden ticket and migrated to [[http://joyent.com|Joyent]] [[http://www.joyent.com/connector/web-hosting/|Shared Accelerators]]. More on this later
* Undergoing my second experience of Southern California wild fires (the last one was in 2003). Updates at the [[http://fireblog.signonsandiego.com|Fireblog]]

San Diego this week

A lot of things are going on:

* [[http://www.rubyconf.org/|RubyConf]]
* [[http://osdw.org/|Open Source Desktop Workshop]]
* This is not in San Diego, but there’s a **free** concert by Indian Ocean up in LA

Unfortunately, all of these things cost too much for me to get into :( Besides, I have a paper deadline on 17th so can’t take that liberty.

While I’m on events, let me take this chance to mention [[http://upcoming.org|Upcoming]] and [[http://eventful.com|Eventful]] — two new additions to the “social” apps bandwagon — these are event calendars. Upcoming was recently acquired by Yahoo, and there’s a lot of momentum behind Eventful (EVDB) too.

Site seeing

[[http://www.seas.upenn.edu/~gauravch/|Gaurav]] and [[http://www.seas.upenn.edu/%7Emsinghal/|Mansi]] are visiting us. Good occassion for me to drive the car around and get to know San Diego roads better. Its a shame that they came at a time when we’re busy with a lot of stuff in school, so we haven’t really been the greatest hosts. But we’re doing what we can :)

I set them up for the Old Town trolley today, which kept them busy for the whole day. Tomorrow they’re going to Sea World. And then they have to leave Saturday morning anyways. In between all this, I realized that there is so much still to see and do in San Diego.
