HP Pavilion a1640n USB support in Ubuntu

At work I have a fairly new box, the HP Pavilion a1640n. I’m running Ubuntu Feisty Fawn on it with all the latest updates. Unfortunately, none of the USB ports work, so I can’t use my USB mouse, or any external drives or any of the other countless USB devices. Clearly not a great situation to be in.

I’ve filed a [[https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/135342|bug report]] on [[http://launchpad.net|Launchpad]]. If you’re facing this same problem, please go vote on the bug and/or give additional information. If you know a fix, that would be even better.

Of this and that

Nothing much to say. Actually I’ve been meaning to write a bunch of stuff, but I’m really knee deep with my internship work, so haven’t gotten around to doing it yet. I will. Soon.

Meanwhile, I’ve been hearing a lot about [[http://feedburner.com|FeedBurner]] these days. So I decided to give it a try. Setting up was trivial using [[http://orderedlist.com|Steve Smith's]] excellent [[http://orderedlist.com/articles/wordpress-feedburner-plugin/|WP FeedBurner plugin]]. So as of now, all my blog feeds are routed through FeedBurner. As always I’m a bit suspicious about everything, but so far they seem to have good intentions.

In other news, I saw [[http://www.glamsham.com/movies/reviews/noentry.asp|No Entry]] on friday night. A mostly crappy movie, but I had tons of fun because I was in good company :-) We were all sitting in the front row laughing our assess of at nothing. Good times :-)

Like I said before, HP internship coming to and end. So I’m busy doing my slides for the talk on Wednesday, wrapping up some final graphs and so on. I’ll probably do a longer talk on friday and will drive back down to San Diego (ah, home sweet home) on saturday. Friday night, I’ll be at Asim’s having loads of tea.

Yesterday we also had our scheduled “technical discussion on Mac OS X” :-D It turned out to be pretty good actually. More on that later. For now, back to work.

Baseball

Last thursday I had gone to the [[http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=250811111|first ever baseball game]] of my life. It was the [[http://oakland.athletics.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp?c_id=oak|A's]] vs the [[http://losangeles.angels.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/index.jsp?c_id=ana|Angels]].

Now, let me make it clear that I know //jack// about baseball. So right before the game I had Alvin and Sara give me a crash course on the basics. After that I lost myself in the food and enjoyed the game.

It has hard not to have a good time there. We had our own private suite, we had food and drinks, a fantastic view and an amazing crowd. For my first game, it turned out to be pretty interesting. The A’s were down 4-0, and eventually then **won** 5-4!! And the last run was just, … well funny! :-)

Of course, it helped that the entire thing was paid for by HP (thanks, Rich and Cristina!). We brought back some popcorn. Nelson unsuccesfully tried to squeeze out some beers, but it was valiant effort nonetheless.

Taboo tuesday

Tonight a bunch of HP interns are gathering at David’s place for a friendly game of Taboo. There’s going to be food and drinks, and it should be fun.

Work is coming along well, I’m feeling good work-wise. Other than that though, nothing really great is happening in life. I feel mostly cynical these days.

Asim’s reaching here this weekend, which is nice. And if he lands up in my apartment complex, that will be just frikking cool :-D

I’ve started the slow and painful process of importing my blog posts (yeah I know I should just write a script, but I’m being lazy and besides, I want to retag all my posts :-D!!) but it’ll be a while. Setting up the gallery will be an order of magnitude easier though, so I’m putting it off for now.

All play and no work

First, I got late at work (forgot my badge at home, again!, and realized it only after I reached HP)

Then drove to Cupertino for the HP Welcome BBQ Lunch. By the time we got back, it was almost 2.

At 2:30 we had the social event for interns working in [[http://www.hpl.hp.com/research/issl/|ISSL]]. It was a lot of fun, and it was good listening to our lab director, Rich. It was also good, because I won a Shrek 2 DVD and a HP Photosmart 245 printer. Apparently, this particular model is out of production now (no wonder it was up for grabs!), but its a nice cute little printer nonetheless and prints great photos, so I’m happy!

After that I just didn’t feel like working. So came home early and trying to get some work done towards the research exam document. July 4th plans are also brewing up and in general the atmosphere is all so that I just can’t get that ‘settle down into work’ type of feeling :)
