Taboo tuesday

Tonight a bunch of HP interns are gathering at David’s place for a friendly game of Taboo. There’s going to be food and drinks, and it should be fun.

Work is coming along well, I’m feeling good work-wise. Other than that though, nothing really great is happening in life. I feel mostly cynical these days.

Asim’s reaching here this weekend, which is nice. And if he lands up in my apartment complex, that will be just frikking cool :-D

I’ve started the slow and painful process of importing my blog posts (yeah I know I should just write a script, but I’m being lazy and besides, I want to retag all my posts :-D!!) but it’ll be a while. Setting up the gallery will be an order of magnitude easier though, so I’m putting it off for now.

All play and no work

First, I got late at work (forgot my badge at home, again!, and realized it only after I reached HP)

Then drove to Cupertino for the HP Welcome BBQ Lunch. By the time we got back, it was almost 2.

At 2:30 we had the social event for interns working in [[http://www.hpl.hp.com/research/issl/|ISSL]]. It was a lot of fun, and it was good listening to our lab director, Rich. It was also good, because I won a Shrek 2 DVD and a HP Photosmart 245 printer. Apparently, this particular model is out of production now (no wonder it was up for grabs!), but its a nice cute little printer nonetheless and prints great photos, so I’m happy!

After that I just didn’t feel like working. So came home early and trying to get some work done towards the research exam document. July 4th plans are also brewing up and in general the atmosphere is all so that I just can’t get that ‘settle down into work’ type of feeling :)

Fateful day

I’m not too keen on talking in any detail about yesterday (that is, June 21, tuesday) other than the fact that this happens to be the day of the summer solstice

But, I did happen to get some nice surprises that day.

Behold, the Force, Master Yoda himself:

And some pretty flowers (from my parents, geez!!!):

Forrest

Last 2 days I’ve been pretty active with [[http://forrest.apache.org | Apache Forrest]]. Primarily with the development and enhancement of the new theme mechanism (skins or views).

Just today I have updated my website with a completely redesigned theme using the new views mechanism. I also wrote the entire CSS from scratch, using the colors from the publicly available KDE, GNOME and Ubuntu color palettes. So far the feedback has been nice, and this theme might actually make its way to the default Forrest theme for the next version!

I’m still tweaking the theme so things might break unexpectedly. If you find something, do drop me a note!

On the academic front, I have read some more papers on virtualization and its kind of disappointing that a lot of the challenges had been very clearly identified and laid out almost 3 decades back, and the worst part is that we are **still** fighting those very same issues today. I have written up some more stuff that I have to go over with Amin tomorrow.

The house hunt for Palo Alto is coming along pathetically, I just have the worst luck ever. [sigh] :-(

Friday the 13th

Today’s day just kind of went by. In the morning I dropped our guests off at Sea World. Then came back and headed for school. My sysnet talk went well today, though it was sad that none of the faculty showed up due to some paper deadlines and an extended student review meeting.

In the evening I picked Gaurav and Mansi back. They were tired so they tucked in for the day early. Meanwhile Panju came over to check out Ragsy’s new keyboard. After some time pass, we decided to dine at Chipotle (what a surprise!) and then catch a movie. We saw Crash tonight. I’ve seen such a powerful movie after a long long time. A lot goes on in the movie, so you’ll probably need to pay a lot of attention. But I whole heartedly highly recommend this movie to all. Its wonderful, deep, and thought provoking. The screenplay and direction is awesome.
