About

Greetings!

My name is Diwaker Gupta and this is Floating Sun, my home on the web.

A brief history

I was born in 1981 on the day of the summer solstice (thats June 21 for the uninitiated) in a sleepy, small (not so small or sleepy anymore) town called Bhilai in the Durg district in the state of Chhattisgarh (erstwhile Madhya Pradesh).

For the majority of my early life (first 18 years, to be precise), I was in Bhilai. Apart from a brief stint in Surabaya, Indonesia and a couple of early years, I did my schooling at Delhi Public School, Bhilai.

I enjoyed the love and care of home till 9th grade. In 10th grade, circumstances forced me to move into a hostel, and the following three years of my boarding-school-life (not quite though, since DPS Bhilai didn’t really have proper boarding school facilities) were full of learning and memorable experiences. 11th and 12th grade were my most enjoyable years at school — I had a great group of friends, going through the whole everyone-preparing-for-IIT thing was great, I pretty much saw all good movies that came out those two years, and I had an amazing time in school. Good times.

I joined the CSE department at IIT, Kanpur in 1999 and graduated with a B.Tech in CSE in 2003. Its hard to sum up the four years at IITK, though I do feel I didn’t make the most of my time there (I didn’t learn gliding, for instance). Amidst all the course work, the galaxies, the Antaraginis and the Techkriti’s, and all the other myriads of experiences that a college life brings with it, I met a lot of great people and hopefully made some friends for life.

Not ready to go into the “real world” yet, I prompty applied for grad school. And so here I am, at the University of California, San Diego, pursuing my Ph.D in Computer Science. But I think I’m nearing the point where I no longer enjoy the cozy, cocooned student life. It shall soon be time to get out there, and this time around I’m looking forward to it. And, hopefully I’ll be prepared.

A taste of me

At various points in the past, I have been proficient in various things to different degrees. I have had extensive traning in the fine arts — drawing, painting, sketching. I have had some training in Indian classical music; I played the [[wp>Tabla|tabla]] for three and a half years. I have had lessons in Indonesian, Frensh and Spanish (though I’m not fluent in any of them). However, the price of getting a taste of all these many things is that I’m not really good at any one of them :-(

I still enjoy bathroom singing. I was never a sports person, meaning I never played any sport too well. But I do enjoy tennis, volleyball, swimming, squash, skiing and sometimes, cricket. I’m not an outdoors fanatic, but I do enjoy camping, hiking and biking in good company ™ :-)

I enjoy reading. I love trying out new technology, in particular tools to help me work smarter, not harder. I’m an open source enthusiast and wile away some of my time following and contributing to various open source projects. I have been enamored with computers and the Web for as long as I can remember.

Free and Open Source Software

I have been involved with F/OSS software for the past 6 years. My first introduction to this brave (not-so-new-anymore) world was with Redhat Linux 6.2 in 1999. Since then I have been dabbling in various projects in my free time. Here are some of the projects I’ve been involved with:

And if you’re still reading and what to know yet more about me, come right this way, please!
