India celebrates its 59th60th Independence day today. Interestingly, [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Independence_Day|Wikipedia]] says that kite-flying is a popular activity across India on this day. Interesting because I never got that impression in all these years. Did any of you guys assocatiate Independence day with kite flying?

For me, 15th August tradionally used to mean half-day at school, white uniforms, speeches, candy pack given at the school (containing 6 orange candies and some Parle-G biscuits), catching glimpses of the parade on TV between running out and playing with the rest of the kids on the street.

Take a moment to think about India.

Some of the northern states – i am sure about delhi and punjab – has a tradition of kite flying on this day. I was brought up flying kites on 15th aug and I miss it today. It would be interesting for you to know, that india is the only country where they contest snapping others kites, else everywhere kite flying has not competition associated with it.

btw did you used to go to presi’s room in hostel on I-day – loads of left over sweets and pastries ;-)

*@nikhil*: thats interesting. I’ve flown kites, but never particularly on I-Day. Did you go for the Padres game? Too bad they lost.

Arey “patant kaatne” mein to bahut maja aati thi. maja wanja n everything. :-)

Nah, not too big on sweets. I did enjoy going to the stadium early in the morning to catch the hoisting though.

Othe than Punjab and Delhi, even UP has a tradition of flying kites on 15th August.
While on the topic of flying kites, people in Gujarat fly kites on 14th january, referred to as Uttarayan in Gujarat (and as Makarsankranti elsewhere) and on 15th January, referred to as Vasi Uttarayan
