Youth For Equality
I am //so// out of words right now. If I did try to speak, I think I’ll only end up cursing the PM and the HRD minister. Why the outrage? As you [[http://in.rediff.com/news/2006/may/23quota3.htm|might have heard]], the **UPA government has decided to go ahead with the 27% reservation plan for OBCs**.
I **strongly urge** all those who feel this is wrong to join [[http://youth4equality.org|Youth For Equality]] — their website has lots of information, so make sure you’re convinced before you join. They sum up my feelings well:
//The youth of today feels that they have been abandoned by their own country. Despite the intensity of the protests and the ongoing negotiations, the UPA government has decided to push through with its proposed 27% quota for OBCs.
ARE WE LIVING IN A DEMOCRACY OR DO WE HAVE TO BOW DOWN TO THIS AUTOCRATIC REGIME???WE WILL NOT GIVE UP OUR STRUGGLE-WE WILL NOT STOP OUR PROTEST-THE STRIKE WILL CONTINUE. WE HAVE BEEN BETRAYED!
Students have been on an indefinite hunger strike for 11 days and have been starving themselves to death, but this shameless government ruled by senile fools shows the audacity to have a party to celebrate 2 years in governance!!!
We will fight this unjust, baseless and populist policy till we get justice
“Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab hamare dil mein hai,
dekhna hai zor kitna bazuein katil mein hai!” //
Its time to join hands. //BE HEARD//.
This Congress Govt has Mastered the art of divide and rule from the Britishers. They are foolish enough to feel happy that more and more controversy is only adding to their vote bank while the country goes to dogs. The worst part is that no other political party has guts enough to speak against this Arjun Bhaan fearing political fallout.
Although, I am not against reservations, this kind of dictatorial attitude shown by the Govt. is not a good sign for the democracy and will not leave any good image of India abroad.
After nearly 60 years of Independence, the reservations need to be made strictly need based irrespective of caste, colour or creed. There should be a limit on the number of reservation benefits for all so that the benefit reaches each and every section of the society and each one makes best use of the opportunity to grow and excel in life.
However, if the govt decides to pass a resolution on the same lines, then let the posts of President, P.M., all cabinet ministers strictly be as per the reservation formula advocated by our govt.
If this policy does not suit their self interests, then the Govt could fight with other evil powers on the earth to bring India on a place of respect and honour in the world:
Reason……
Our country with one 5th the World’s entire population needs reservation in Olympics since we are not even getting a fraction of our share of medals.
Any takers…
R. Razdan
All these reservations are politically motivated and is strengthening the roots of casteism and cast preferences in Indian society and specially in new generation. If Government is really interested in the welfare of some particular section of society, It should provide free education, free competition preparation schools and special cells to promote education and competition in this section. But rather than working in real and honest direction, It is just adopting quick shortcuts to befool real backward and scheduled class who is living in villages and is not even aware of any such reservations.
1.Are not these reservation continuously used by rich people and economically and socially respected families who happen to have these sc/bc certificates. Why they need reservation??
2. Reservation in medical? Are you crazy or what??. Do you want to play with human lives. If God forbid, you have a heart operation and admitted in PGI, and you are told that it will be done by a doctor who had not even 20% marks in medical education and he is crowned as a doctor using the stretcher of reservation, what will happen to you. WILL YOU ALLOW HIM TO OPEN YOUR HEART??????
3. Why one person show use reservation more than 1 time in his life. I know a lot of cases when a person used reservation for admission to a college , than reservation for job . Why? How many supports he need?
4. Why the son of a Engineer/Doctor who is earning 10 Lakhs a year need a reservation for his son just because he has a certificate??
I don’t think anybody is listening to striking students as PM,President of India are not responsible people but just ignorant people who are surrounded by foolish people.
Such irresponsible administration is the cause that India is still not a developed country.
Only New generation is a bit hope if ever something better can happen.

i think its high time that we all stand against this atrocity of the government imposing ridiculous quotas on deserving students. why the hell should we suffer this brunt for the sake of these filthy politicians vote banks. wat is the use of voting such a hopless government!!!! we should just ban this quota system totally, forget about 27%, ban the damn quota.
The country is being divided on caste basis again. The british ruled us using divide and rule. What this government is doing, using the formula by british. Are these better or worst than those intruders in our country. These are our own bloods, who want to fulfil their own interest. They don’t care where country is going. No one is considering the social issues, poverty, farmers doing suicide, food items getting adultrated, making our next generations weaker. The reservation must be wiped of from yhe higher education. There is no point in supporting reservation in higher education. If they don’t have enough seats in education for the poor and backward people, they don’t have right to snatch the opertunity of getting educated from non-backward classes. We want our opertunity to gain knowledge and higher education open and in full. SAY COMPLETE NO TO RESERVATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION like MBBS,IIT’s,IIM’s , other engineerings.
As long as we have faith in your own cause and unconquerable will to will, victory cannot be denied us. We should not lose faith in ourselves and in the purpose of our cause. We must remember that the future of fifty crore people hinge on our behaviour. Mahatma Gandhi is a good example of a man with cause. He could go weeks without food in pursuit of his cause and endure tremendous pain for the sake of his convictions. We all need to emulate Mahatma Gandhi and pledge ourselves to restoring equality in the society. If we give up the cause history will not forgive us. The oppression on us will keep continuing. Crores of people will continue to suffer when their future will be stolen from them. Their moans of agony on being deprived of their future will curse us. We cannot let down these young bright students of our country. We owe it to them and we should fight for their cause. We should fight for our children’s cause. These young people may be our children. We should fight for our future and the future of our children. We should fight for a good society, where everybody is treated equally. It doesn’t mean not helping the poor. Every day we can work with NGO’s to make the life of poor children better. We can make all students of the country above after second year of pre-university spend their one year in community cause, but we should not let our future get destroyed.
The stand on reservation quota by UPA Government is like murdering of child still to see the world, its death of democracy and globalization.
consider two cases,
1. A low – middle class upper caste parents, trying very hard to give best education to their children, would sacrifice there one time meal, lead life very simple, restricting celebrations and saving money for educating of children. The child scoring very good marks, but still not getting entrance in
professional institue.
2.And the lower caste parents who spend extravagently inspite of their poverty,(drinking to death)with out making any savings,Automatically (in majority cases) the child fails to do good in academics, but still gains entrance in the top institute.
The reservation quota is like opposing the natures law (Survival of the fittest), and in this gloabalized world. If this state continues in the near
future i fear our country would be again colonised.
support anti-reservation quota, to save our country.
Any caste based reservations or quota means approval to the age old system ,instead of discarding it.It is dividing india in to casts.Further it will divide in to small castes. Is this principal in line with the pre independence congress of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawarlal Nehru. On need to take of objects of pre and post indepence congress. It is taking us again to slavery.
now the government is taking the help of supreme court’s decision to suppress the movement for demand to do something positive for uplifting the education in india.because politicians do not want educated society to question them.what had happened when this same supreme court had asked the politicians to resign on the issue of office of profit?then parliament passed another rule to contradict the court.then who the court now is to order the students?
Hey,
I’ve designed this image at http://weedwanderer.blogspot.com/ in support of protestors against reservation….please do chk it out and feel free to post it on your blog.
Thanks,

I am 16 yrs old and in 12th std. I did not know which caste I belonged until I recd the form to be filled in just before appearing for the board exam. I knew I am a Hindu, my friend Sireen a Muslim and Anoop a Christain. I filled in as Hindu. My teacher asked me to check with my parents and fill in the details. My parents were a bit confused as my mom and dad came from different castes they said. I did not understand. My dad’s side and mom sides family and social gatherings were all similar. so distinction. I am confused. Then my parents ran thru the list of castes (which they say the govt has brought out) which would be most beneficial to me to elbow my way in any educational institution or for job purposes and chose the best suitable one, and as proof dug out the family tree of both Mom and Dad.
Till 15 yrs of age I was casteless. I studied about the caste only in text books as existing only during vedic ages. Also I studied in my history books that there used to be untouchbility practiced in India. That such castes and tribes were indentified and inserted in the schedule to the constitution. And that Dr Amedkar himself a untouchable class ensured and assured all those castes mentioned there would be uplifted, given proper education with ALL SINCERITY BY THE GOVT and social justice given to them. And after about 10 yrs of independance, there would be no castes in this country. We would be known only as Indians.
But now I know that there are many castes.
Most of my friends fathers and mothers are working. They are class 1 govt officers. But I confused to know that Minashkhi my friend is an OBC. But is the samrtest in the class. Both her parents are govt offcers. She is dropped and picked in school, in coaching centers etc in white ambassodor cars flashing govt dept stickers. Her mother goes for shopping in the such a car. She gets the very best of things where we go. She has seen half the world at govt expense. I ASK MYSELF ‘WHICH IS THIS NEW CASTE WHICH IS CALLED OBC?’ I asked her once and she said there are many who belong to HER CASTE but enjoying many more perks than her.
Then I heard about the govt move to give reservation for OBC. Menashki came in my mind. Then i heard about the striking medicos? I asked myself. why are they striking. Meenashki came in my mind. I got the answer. and I decided to support the striking students. Arjun singh and all other politicians who are suposed to think and look after the welfare and future of the youth of Indifor the good of India, are at such advanced age and are ready to kick the bucket. But I am only 16 yrs. I have to think about myself, my children to be born, many in the remotest villages where the perks and previleges enjoyed by Meenaskhi would only be a unheard fiction, many schools in the villages where the funds are pocketed by the muscle power on that area, my country, to make my country the super power. And FOR THAT I HAVE TO BE WITH THE STRIKING MEDICAL STUDENTS. I STRONGLY OPPOSE RESERVATION IN ANY FORM OTHER THAN ECONOMIC.
VEDA RAO
Note: This appeal has been written with all those communities in mind that would be adversely affected by the quota politics of UPA Government. But since upper castes as a community are the ones who are likely to lose the most so their name surfaces very often in this appeal. But, let no one doubt it, this appeal is being made with all those people in mind who do not agree with the divisive politics of this Government.
As you can understand, this is not an attempt to caste aspersions on other communities but, as we all know, human beings if not properly educated are prone to be swayed by the appeals of the irrational and this whole politics of quotas is nothing else but an attempt to play with this very sentiment of the so-called backward sections of our population. With the exception of upper castes, almost all other communities in one way or the other are already benefitting from this politics of quota or are likely to benefit from it. Hence, inspite of the best of efforts not to sound so, it is not always possible to sound effectively neutral. But, we in no way wish to hurt the sentiments of any community. Just like all of you, we also believe that merit is not the preserve of any single community and every one should be given equality of opportunities.
Dear Friends,
First let me congratulate you all for the tremendous determination being shown by all of you. Justice begets strength and those who fight for it become the torchbearers in the eyes of future generations. All of us must take a vow to fight till the bitter end.
Things in India have been on a continuous downward spiral right since the end of period of general optimism seen just after independence. Instead of shaping India into a genuine democracy, Congress and other parties that succeeded it in power did everything to undermine the actual spirit of democracy and turn this country into a mobocracy. In the Indian democracy, the only thing that matters is the numbers. Numerical strength of communities are at a premium and merit and quality have been reduced to taboos.
We all know that it is a dangerous path for a nation to tread but the future of a nation has to be the joint responsibility of each and every single individual in that nation. Today, we are in a situation where we have been entrusted with the unenviable task of bearing the burden of taking the country forward and at the same time being punched around by almost all political parties whenever they feel that they do not have anymore crums to offer to the masses. We have become the modern day Jews, abandoned by our own country and disowned by the powers that be.
Every passing day in the political life of this country is only highlighting the fact that for upper castes in particular and for other communities not falling under the reservation net in general, the future is nothing better than a bottomless pit. Perhaps the agenda of the present day political parties is to seek the total destruction of the upper castes and to forcibly push them into wretched penury and that too at the earliest. It is increasingly clear that the modern day Indian politics is all about vendetta and the upper castes are at the receiving end of it all.
This windstorm of reservations is not going to stop here. Tomorrow Congress and others of its ilk might raise the bogey of the minorities and start asking for reservations for minorities of all kinds, religious, linguistic etc. What would happen then? What would happen if tomorrow a demand arises to reserve 50% of all the jobs in the private sector? The fact remains that among upper castes also, there is a substantial section that is just as poor as the so-called backward sections of Indian society and not just that, today, certain communities (like the yadavas and the kurmis) among the so-called backward sections are in a much better position that the upper castes but not a single political party is ready to honestly raise these issues. This is yet another example of the extent to which the Indian state has become antagonistic towards all those who stand for equality and justice but the upper castes are the ones who bear the maximum brunt of this vindictive attitude of the Indian state.
Something like this had happened before independence also. A large section of the muslim population in India and its leadership felt that it would not be possible to safeguard the interests of the muslim minority in the face of an antagonistic Hindu majority. We all know what happened because of the germination of this kind of perception among the mulims. Whether their fears were real or imagined is a secondary thing. But, if the nation could split at that time then it can split even now. At that time muslims felt themselves to be at the receiving end and right we are facing a similar plight. In the form of Muslim League, the muslims at least had a party that felt obliged to fight for their rights but we do not have even that. Today, political parties consider it a mortal sin to fight for our rights. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the upper castes are the only true minority in India at the moment and that too, an abandoned and a hated minority.
The question is what should we do? It is not an easy question to answer at the moment. But we do not anymore have the luxury of time and hence procrastination is someting that we can not afford to indulge in anymore. Our leaders and this system has repeatedly betrayed us and time and again doors have been closed on our face and we were told to sacrifice a bit for the welfare of the downtrodden but now, we have had enough of it. How long can the Government of this country expect us to keep on sacricing without getting anything in return? Afterall, there is a limit to how much the upper castes can take and it is necessary to let Government of India know that we have exhausted our stock of patience and would not take anymore of this non-senae.
The example of mass exodus of Brahmins from Tamil Nadu in not too distant a past and the general atmosphere of animosity towards the upper castes in almost all provinces should serve as a good warning and as a basis for the belief that, ceteris paribus, henceforth upper castes in India would always have to live under the shadow of a hostile majority and an apathetic Government. What happened with the Tamilian Brahmins can happen to upper castes anywhere in India since we are a minority almost everywhere. If things do not change then it is not going to be easy for forward castes to coexist with others. It is now clear that present day political parties are not at all ready to do anything concrete to douse this smouldering fire. In fact, it suits them to keep the status-quo
Besides, experience tells us that Indian politicians only understand the language of force. As long as a community tries to peacefully and calmly protest, it is mercilessly suppressed but the moment it assumes a threatening posture, Indian state is more than willing to negotiate. Things have reached a point where the Indian state only recognises the sufferings of those who threaten it and not of those who profess loyalty and love for it. The example of Maoists, Kashmiri separatists and various other extremist groups in different parts of the country is a case in point. Government of India is more than willing to talk to naxalites and offer them amnesty but not to to the ordinary members of the upper castes who, under the threat of extermination at the hands of these very naxalites, were forced to take to arms and form their own militias. What could they have done, on one hand Indian state was not capable enough to offer them security and on the other hand it refused to let them protect themselves? Today Government of India is holding peace talks with separatists whose stated agenda is to seek the destruction of the Indian state but it is not ready to talk to members of Ranveer Sena who were forced to take up arms in self-defense. Every one knows that Government of India offers VIP treatment to naxalites when they are in jail but members of Ranveer Sena are treated as criminals and their families mercilessly persecuted in spite of the fact that Ranveer Sena , unlike the naxalites, in no way threatens the existence of the Indian state. On the contrary, it only helps the Indian state establish its writ in the naxal affected areas.
Till now, the members of the upper caste had at least one consolation. They were by and large confident that even if things go terribly wrong for them in the villages and in the agriculture sector (and it has already become unbearable because of naxalities and the faulty agricultural policies followed by successive regimes) then they would be able to secure a good future for themselves by getting good quality education and finding alternative sources of employment. But now, it seems Governmernt of India is hell bent to snatch even that opportunities from them. We are ready to compete and want the others too to be given a chance to compete but it seems Government of India wants to throw us in the ocean with our hands and legs tied. Perhaps it wants to sit back and enjoy the sadistic pleasure of watching us struggle a bit and then go down never to come up again. But, let us show the politicians in India that if we could nurture them and the state whose overlordship they are claiming then we can also plot its decline.
Indian Keeping in mind, the socio-political realities of our times, the following points can serve as a good starting point.
1) We must form a new political outfit devoted exclussively to fighting for the rights of the upper castes in particualar and of other people disowned by the Indian state in general.
This outfit should under no condition feel embarrassed while talking about the interests of the upper castes. This outfit would be entrusted with the task of uniting all the upper castes all over India and bringing them under its umbrella. It is quite clear that the politics of vendetta currently pursued under the garb of social justice is here to stay and it might also take an uglier turn. So before things really spin out of control, we must take the intitiative and form such a political party. We must keep in mind the fact that the struggle we are currently waging is political in nature and a modern political battle can be decisively fought only if it is commandeered by a political party History of the modern world bears testimony to it All great struggles were fought under the aegis of political parties.
Being the sole representative of the upper castes, this political outfit would place before Government of India two alternatives and would tell that the fulfillment of any of those would lead to the fulfillment of the aspirations of the upper castes in India. The two demands would be:
a) Let there be a separate country for the upper castes and for others falling under the general category. We would call this country Sawarnaland or Aryavarta. Upper castes and the others falling under the general category constitute roughly 25% of the total population of this country (15% upper castes, a section of the muslims, christians, sikhs, jains and other communities like the Jats in Haryana). So, acting on the principle of the equitable distribution of the Lebensraum (living space), this political party would ensure that the country that would be so born would have roughly 25% of the total land mass of India. Further more, it would also ensure that the new born country would have access to the sea and the ratio of coast line to to the total land area must be the same (if not more) as it for India at the moment In order to avoid a West-Pakistan and and and an East-Pakistan like situation , we would fight for the land area of the new country to be contiguous. This political party would also ensure that Sawarnaland would inherit its due share of resources from India. We would assure the rest of India that once Sawarnaland is formed, we would have extremely cordial relations with them just like Mauritius has with India at the moment.
2) If we feel that the vast majority of the upper caste population is not ready to split India then we can forward another proposal to the Government. In this proposal, instead of demanding a separate country, we sould demand 25% of the Indian land mass (excluding the Bangladesh border and the north-east and with access to the sea) to be declared quota free zones. The areas falling under this zone would form a new province called Sawarnaland. We would tell the rest of India (comprising of SC/STs, OBCs and otyhers of their ilk) that this would be beneficial to them as well since once Sawarnaland is formed, they would be in a position to have 100% or 200% or even 500% reservations for themselves in as many fields as they want.
Once Sawarnaland is formed, inn cooperation with Government of India, we would ensure a peaceful transfer of population But, in order to avoid the tragedy of 1947, we would stagger this period of transfer of population and fix up a sufficiently long period of time say 20 years for effective, complete and peaceful transfer of population. Right sice the day of the inception of such an arrangement, upper castes any where in India would automatically be considered domiciliaries of this area and would have the right to vote there.
For all other purposes, the legal status of people on both sides would remain the same as it is today. People from the rest of India would be allowed to come, live and work in Sawarnaland and vice-versa but people from the rest of India would not be registered as a voter in Sawarnaland.
Note: The blue print of how to fight for Sawarnaland whether as a country or as a separate province within the Indian union is ready. This would help us not only fight for Sawarnaland but also to effectively deal with all the other issues that would be encountered once we have succeeded in carving out Sawarnaland for us and for our future generations. Issues like how to properly govern the area, issues related to resource sharing between the rest of India and Sawarnaland, issues related to relations between New Delhi and Sawarnaland and all other issues have been discussed in that blueprint. If the upper caste community agrees then we can have a full-fledged discussion on it. In fact, a group of people, I happen to be a part of, had foreseen this day coming and that is why we had prepared this kind of road map precisely to deal with a situation like this.
My best wishes are with you all in your struggle. But, if you sit down and objectively analyze the situation then all of you would come to the same conclusion and that is that we are so hopelessly outnumbered in India that we do not have a secured future in the present set up and ipso facto we have no other option but to proceed on the above mentioned course of action.
I would eagerly wait for your response,
with regards,
A concerned fellow citizen
I fully agree with the views expressed hereinabove. We have to fight for our rights by forming a political party. We will have to follow what Siddharthaji has outlined in the above comment. There is no other option for those who cannot leave this country for good.
Sanjay
All this needless sound and fury about reservation is the result of upper caste envy, insecurity, irresponsibility and ignorance of history.
No one but William Shakespeare would have thought of putting the resources of mankind to an incredible and unparalleled extent into the mouth of Hamlet thus:
‘what a piece of work is man! how noble in reason!
how infinite in faculties! in form and moving how
express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world!
the paragon of animals!’ (Hamlet, Act II Scene II).
If ‘human resources’ are simply ‘people’ endowed and equipped with a wide range of abilities and attributes which may remain dormant or latent, Nation building calls for making use of all resources to maximum advantage. It is futile to argue that that only one section of people have all the talents and the rest are skeletons clothed with skins. While the former seize of all opportunities, the latter are unaware of opportunities that are laid on their way. More than nature, it is nurture that accounts for people’s advancement in society. While non-OBCs have a responsibility to see that the OBCs are enabled to make strides in life, the OBCs should realise that the non-OBCs are not children of step-mothers.In the final analysis, the strings of the lute may remain at a distance to each other, but they will quiver with the same melodius music when played on. Eventhough, the pillars of the temple may stand apart, they are intended to keep the edifice in tact. What we should become aware of is that a policy of ‘divide and rule’ is making a dress-rehearsal. Let us unitely draw the curtain down before the final play plays havoc.
Wow. Thanks everyone for the comments — its good to see so many people coming forward with their opinions on the matter. Since everyone seems to be in agreement, I won’t have a lot to add, but I’ll still try and respond to everyone.
*@razdan*: None of the parties will openly come out against reservations because of fear of losing the vote banks. Also, I don’t think our “image abroad” is the big concern here — we stand to sustain far greater losses within if this goes to implementation. And I agree, if politicians are so adamant about reservations, let me start with reservations in the Parliament.
*@sukhvir*: all good points, mate. Lets keep up the efforts to make the government take notice. Did you get a chance to go to the Youth4Equality rally in the Bay Area? I just fear that with the Supreme Court’s intervention, the courageous efforts of all the striking students in India might go to waste.
*@ruchi*: sadly banning the quota system entirely is not possible. In a democracy the size of India, such drastic change faces a lot of resistance, specially when there are so many vested interests in this issue. Please do join the Youth4Equality website, they need all the support!
*@vikas*: I hear you buddy, lets hope the government does too.
*@raj*: Well said Raj. Its good to see so much confidence in someone when most people (myself included) have a defeatist/pessimistic outlook on the situation.
*@raghu*: Exactly! I was in Gwalior a while back, and in pro-reservation rallys there, one of the big arguments was that the fraction of people complaining against reservations is very small. You know what would really help? If some people from the OBC community would come forward and give their opinions.
*@dileep*: Precisely my thoughts. This whole reservation infrastructure is just perpetuating the very evil that has been legally abolished by our constitution.
*@mona*: I fear that the courts intervention was just another govt. tactic to slow down the anti-reservation movement. By invoking phrases such as “contempt of court” and “trust in the premiere legal institution of the country”, the striking students were forced to become defensive. Lets hope the SC pulls through and restores our faith in the judiciary.
*@kb*: dood, I tried to find the logo, but can’t figure out which post its buried in.
*@veda*: I’m impressed by your passion young man. Sadly, when I was your age, I hardly paid any attention to matters that did not immediately concern me, and so its really good to see that you’re thinking beyond yourself and even looking out into the future. Keep the faith and lets not give up just yet.
*@sidharth*: dude, that was a LOOOOOOOONG post. And slightly annoying, because I have several copies of the same comment at different places on my blog, _and_ on blogs elsewhere. I understand your urge to spread your opinions, but please, lets not turn this into a spam.
You keep talking as “we” in your comment — who is “we”? Your appeal is very well written, but I find the underlying current of “I’m from the upper caste and this is a batter against the lower castes” slightly disturbing, despite the disclaimers you make in the beginning of the comment. I’m not a big fan of violence or force, so your disposition towards the Naxalite movement etc. is even more concerning. In general I don’t find myself agreeing with your proposed plan of action (vis-a-vis an exclusively pro “upper caste” outfit — I don’t see how its any different from any other fundamentalist group). So good luck to you and your plan. The demand to create a separate country is stupid at best. Please stop spreading this crap around.
*@sanjay*: Feel free to help out Mr. Siddharth in his endeavor. IMNSHO think its a dangerous, futile and destructive route and you would be better off channelising your energies elsewhere.
*@desi*: riiiiiiiight.
*@dr. rangarajan*: very well said, Sir.
